Sustainable Agriculture
Introduction
In this module, we will start by describing the origin of agriculture; then, we will take a look at the consequences of modern industrial agriculture in order to examine some possible alternatives to reduce these consequences. The module also explains the political, social and economic consequences of different farming practices and how some of these consequences have been addressed.Learning Objectives
By the end of the module, you will be able to- define sustainable agriculture and its components;
- analyze and debate the challenges and issues related to current industrial agriculture;
- describe the various potential alternative practices for sustainable agriculture;
- discuss issues of food security and safety, and related regulations and legislation;
- explain why it is important to move towards a more sustainable farming system; and
- apply the concepts of sustainable agriculture in various situations.
