Applications of Geospatial Technologies

The list below highlights some examples of projects and fields that may use geospatial technologies to address environmental sustainability challenges. In particular, we highlight how the use of geospatial technologies are used to study wetland ecosystems in southern Ontario and in the Canadian North.

Wetlands:
- Mapping and monitoring of inland wetland systems
Northern environments:
- Monitoring sea ice extent
- Climate change impacts on northern ecosystems
Forestry:
- Forest fire mapping (e.g., mapping forest fires in BC, Fort McMurray, Alberta, etc.)
- Species mapping (mountain pine beetle in BC), mapping outbreak of Emerald ash borer in Ontario
Precision agriculture/viticulture:
- Detecting grapevine red blotch disease
- Spatio-temporal variability of soil moisture
