Environmental Sustainability in Practice

Planning and Management: Essential for Environmental Sustainability

We are all connected to the environment in multiple, critical ways, and we cannot really separate people from the environment (this concept is called a social ecological system). We rely on freshwater for drinking; we eat food that comes from crops grown in fields; we recreate in natural areas and water bodies. Many of the decisions we make and actions we take in society have potential impacts on the environment.

A good example of these impacts and interconnections is the town of Lincoln in the Niagara Region, where there are multiple pressures being felt in this growing community.

Our decisions and actions can support or hinder the sustainability of our environment. By explicitly taking into account the environment in these decisions and actions, environmental sustainability is supported.
